Mrs. Nettie S. Freed
Our school was named in honor of Mrs. Nettie S. Freed.
Mrs. Freed was born in 1881 and died at the age of 97 in 1979. She graduated from Centennial High School in 1899. She started her career in education as principal of Fruita High School in 1903 and then taught foreign language at Centennial High School from 1904-1907. She was Pueblo County Superintendent of schools from 1931-1946 and then became the first woman to hold the post of Colorado State Superintendent of Public Education from 1946 to 1951.
In addition to her career in education, Mrs. Freed was also a successful business woman, wife, and mother of five children.
We are very proud to have our school named after such a dedicated education professional. If you would like to learn more about Mrs. Freed please stop by our library.
